Adair County Schools announced that there will be no school on Friday so students and others can attend the funeral of an eighth-grade student killed in a DUI crash on Easter Sunday.

Skyler “Sky” Colton Huckaby, 14, of Columbia, an eighth grader at Adair County Middle School, died early Sunday morning in a DUI crash near the Adair-Russell County line.

As a result of the crash, police arrested 31-year-old David King, of Columbia, and charged him with vehicular homicide when under the influence of alcohol, this third DUI (aggravating circumstances), first-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, reckless driving, and failure to wear a seatbelt.

The school district released the following statement regarding the cancellation of classes:

“Out of love and respect for the family of Skyler Huckaby … all Adair County Schools will be closed on Friday, April 25, to allow students, staff, and the community to attend his funeral.”

Skyler’s obituary says he was a member of Future Farmers of America.

“His family considered him to be a true ‘country boy,'” his obituary states. “Sky had a big heart for those in his life and that was evident by how much he loved his family.  He dreamed of one day becoming a police officer and serving the community.  Sky had a wonderful personality, and he was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
