Inmates in the Butler County Jail came to the rescue of a deputy jailer who was being assaulted by an inmate attempting to escape.
Morgantown Police Chief Giles Taylor said officers responded to the jail on Sunday and determined that 26-year-old Charles M. Clayton, of Russellville, “had placed a deputy jailer in a chokehold, threatened to stab him and demanded the keys to the jail’s door in an attempt to escape.”
A trustee witnessed the assault and “physically attacked Clayton in an effort to release the deputy jailer,” Taylor stated.
Soon after, a second deputy jailer arrived to assist his co-worker. During the altercation, Clayton seized control of the jailer’s taser and tried to tase the deputy and another inmate.
Two other inmates, though, then arrived and helped restrain Clayton.
Clayton was charged with kidnapping (adult), first-degree strangulation, first-degree attempted escape, disarming a peace officer, third-degree assault on a correctional employee, and first-degree criminal mischief.
