A 19-year-old girl has perished after she was unable to find her way out of a massive house fire.
Four people were inside the home when the fire broke out, two elderly males, a young male and 19-year-old Kaitlynn Newton. All but Newton escaped the flames.
One of the elderly men told the Ohio Co. Sheriff’s Office that he crawled through heavy smoke to alert Newton, who was in a bedroom in the rear of the home, according to WEVV.com. He was unable to make it to the teenager, though.
Ohio Co. Sheriff Adam Wright told WEVV.com that Newton’s body was found in the rear of the home, as she was apparently unable to exit the residence “due to the heavy amount of fire.”
The Hartford and Centertown Fire Departments battled the blaze for several hours, which was complicated by exploding ammunition.
The fire began in the living room of the home and spread quickly. The investigation into how the blaze began is ongoing.
The Ohio Co. Sheriff’s Office is leading the death investigation.
