The stepfather of an eight-year-old Hopkins County boy who died from a fentanyl overdose has been sentenced to prison.
Antonio Person, 34, of Madisonville, was sentenced to 25 years in prison in the death of Trey Harris on March 15, 2024. Person pled guilty in a Hopkins County courtroom to second-degree manslaughter, aggravated first-degree trafficking of fentanyl, felon in possession of a handgun, possession of marijuana, and five counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a report by WAVE.com.
Initially, it was thought Harris may have died from eating tainted strawberries, but on March 26, 2024, the Madisonville Police Department executed a search warrant related to Trey’s death investigation and located a large amount of fentanyl in the home the boy shared with Person and his wife and Trey’s mother, Whitney Person. Antonio Person was arrested on drug and other charges following the search of the residence.
On April 10, 2024, only a few days after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said tests on strawberries that were thought to possibly be tied Trey’s death came back “negative,” the Hopkins County Coroner’s Office says the child died from a fentanyl overdose.
