An armed Edmonson County man led police on a high-speed pursuit that ended near the Grayson County line after holding a gun to a relative’s head and stealing his credit cards.
The incident began Wednesday just before 8:00 a.m. when 36-year-old Jerry Napier, of Brownsville, went to a residence on Beaver Dam Church Road armed with a handgun, Edmonson County Sheriff James Vincent told K105.
While at the home, Napier held a male relative and another person at gunpoint, while also holding the gun to his relative’s head and stealing his credit cards. The suspect then fled the scene.
Law enforcement spotted Napier in the parking lot of the Brownsville Dollar Store in the 1300 block of North Main Street (Hwy 259/70), Vincent said. But Napier fled deputies west on Morgantown Road (Hwy 70), striking a police cruiser in the process before later in the chase running the same cruiser off the road, disabling the vehicle.
The suspect, fleeing police at speeds reaching 100 miles per hour, turned right onto Sunfish Road (Hwy 187) and left onto Sunny Point Road. Napier then crashed into a field — where Vincent said he struck a gas well — near the intersection of Sunny Point Road and Bowling Green Road (Hwy 185), approximately a half mile outside of Grayson County.
Napier then fled on foot at 8:44 a.m., as deputies borrowed a side-by-side from a nearby resident and captured Napier at gunpoint in a field at 8:58 a.m.
He was charged with first-degree robbery, two counts of fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle, on foot), possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, first-degree wanton endangerment, second-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, first-degree criminal mischief, and reckless driving.
Napier was lodged in the Hart County Jail.
