A school resource officer (SRO) in eastern Kentucky has been struck by a school bus.

The incident happened Monday afternoon at approximately 3:30 at Pine Knot Primary School in McCreary County.

McCreary County Schools Superintendent Brian Crawford told WYMT.com that SRO Angie Vanover was directing traffic in front of the school as students were being dismissed when she was struck by a school bus.

Vanover was airlifted to University of Kentucky Medical Center, with Crawford saying she suffered broken bones and lacerations.

“But from everything we know, there are no life-threatening injuries,” Crawford told WYMT.com.

Students were on the bus that struck Vanover but no injuries were reported.

The McCreary County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing video footage of the incident but it’s not likely that criminal charges will be filed.

Vanover previously served as a deputy with the Whitley Co. Sheriff’s Office.

Crawford released the following statement on the incident:

McCreary County School District is sharing an update regarding an accident involving one of our school buses this evening. While we are grateful that no students sustained physical injuries, our hearts are with our dedicated staff member who was injured. We ask the community to join us in keeping her and her family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. We recognize that this was a traumatic experience for those involved, and to provide support, Augment counselors will be available at each school tomorrow to assist any students or staff in need.

We are working closely with local authorities to ensure a full investigation of the incident and will provide any necessary updates as they become available.

Our district is grateful for the swift response of emergency personnel, school staff, and community members who provided immediate assistance. We appreciate the continued support of our Raider family as we navigate this difficult time together.
