A former high school and middle school coach and teacher in Laurel County has been sentenced in federal court.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky announced on Friday that 32-year-old William T. Goodson, formerly of London, was sentenced to 246 months (20.5 years) in federal prison for the online enticement of a minor. He must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence.

Goodson was formerly an assistant coach for the girls basketball team at South Laurel High School and a coach at South Laurel Middle School, The London Sentinel-Echo previously reported.

According to his plea agreement, between August 2023 and February 23, 2024, while he was a teacher at South Laurel Middle School, Goodson persuaded a minor to engage in sexual activity, according to prosecutors.

“Specifically, Goodson communicated many sexually explicit messages with the victim, through text messages and Snapchat. When questioned,” prosecutors said,” Goodson told police that his relationship with the minor was like that of a boyfriend, and he further admitted to buying the victim gifts and communicating daily, via Snapchat.  Ultimately, Goodson convinced the minor victim to engage in sexual contact, on multiple occasions, within his classroom.”

London police arrested Goodson in March 2024 and initially charged him with first-degree sexual abuse, procuring/promoting the use of a minor by electronic means, unlawful transaction with a minor (illegal sex act, victim under 18), and use of a minor under 18 in a sexual performance.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI and London Police Department.
