A man suffering an apparent medical emergency while driving, possibly because of taking too many pain pills, fled the Caneyville constable into Edmonson County.

Caneyville Constable Alvin Dockery on Monday night at approximately 6:00 made contact with a vehicle that at times traveled in the opposite lane while driving at around 40 miles per hour on Bowling Green Road (Hwy 185), just south of Caneyville.

Dockery initiated his lights and sirens, but the vehicle’s driver refused to stop. As the low-speed pursuit continued, the driver nearly left the roadway multiple times and continued to periodically drive in the opposite lane.

The vehicle entered Edmonson County (Edmonson County deputies had been previously notified the pursuit was entering their county) and turned right onto Sunny Point Road where the driver came to a stop in the 2700 block.

According to Dockery, as soon as he made contact with the driver, a 69-year-old man from Bardstown, he handed the constable a bottle of pain pills as he exited the vehicle.

Soon, Grayson County Deputy Joel Baker and Edmonson County deputies arrived on scene. Edmonson County EMS was also dispatched.

As law enforcement continued to speak with Birdsong, it became clear that he was experiencing a medical episode, possibly caused by ingesting too many pain pills, as he was disoriented and had no idea where he was.

He was transported by Edmonson County EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center, and his family notified.
