An elderly Caneyville woman’s house was destroyed and her dog killed in a residential fire.
The Caneyville and Leitchfield Fire Departments responded to the blaze at approximately 7:00 p.m. Saturday in the 2400 block of Bowling Green Road (Hwy 185).
Firefighters encountered a nearly fully engulfed wood/metal siding structure when they arrived at the scene. A car parked in front of the home was also on fire.
The elderly female occupant made it out of the home, but was unable to save her dog. She injured her head while trying to retrieve the dog as the fire burned, and was transported by EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center where she was treated and later released.
Firefighters from both departments battled the blaze for well over an hour but the structure was a total loss.
Caneyville Fire Chief Brian Pharris said a space heater next to a cabinet by the sink in the kitchen, placed there to keep the pipes from freezing, likely started the fire.
The Red Cross is providing assistance to the woman.
