A man has been arrested after being accused of shooting at the Taylor County sheriff four times.

The incident occurred Saturday evening when Taylor County Sheriff Dickie Benningfield was dispatched to a report of shots fired on Pops Road, about 12 miles northwest of Campbellsville.

Upon arriving at the scene, and as he stood next to his cruiser, Benningfield heard four shots and found four bullet holes in the rear of the cruiser, according to a report by WAVE.com.

During a search of the area, Benningfield and a deputy located the suspect, 31-year-old Cody T. Laytart, who resisted arrest, spit in the deputy’s face and kicked out the back window of a cruiser.

He was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, third-degree assault of a police officer, public intoxication, second-degree criminal mischief, and second-degree terroristic threatening.

Laytart was lodged in the Taylor County Detention Center.
