The Grayson County Detention Center, which is accustomed to giving to the community, recently won two awards and was recognized by Sen. Mitch McConnell.

Jailer Jason Woosley and staff members were recognized with two Community Partner Awards at the second annual Stave Awards. The awards were bestowed by the U.S. Marshals Service for the Eastern District of Kentucky.

“It is an honor to be recognized as an outstanding community partner by the US Marshals Office in Lexington,” Woosley said. “As you know, it is not a one-person show. We have 150 employees, and it takes all of us working in unison as a team to make things go smoothly and to be successful.”

Woosley added that his team has booked over 4,600 inmates this year, and traveled over one million miles for the U.S. Marshals Service “moving inmates to and from court and prisons all over the United States.”

“I cannot say enough great things about our team of corrections professionals here at GCDC. It is a great privilege to serve our community and we look forward to continued growth and strength in our relationships with community partners,” Woosley stated.

In addition to the Community Partner Awards, the GCDC was presented with a letter from U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell recognizing the detention center’s “continued service to the commonwealth of Kentucky.”

Woosley and the GCDC, a financially self-sufficient entity, have a lengthy track record of donating vehicles and labor to assist local causes, as well as providing assistance to other counties.

In 2022, the GCDC, in cooperation with the Grayson County Coroner’s Office and Grayson County Fiscal Court, donated a transport van to Letcher County after all of that counties vehicles were destroyed in historic flooding.

During the expansion of the detention center, completed in March 2021, Woosley saved approximately $300,000 by using inmate labor to complete resilient and resinous flooring work.

In 2019, the GCDC donated a transport van to the Leitchfield Animal Shelter, in addition to the inmate labor the jail provides the facility.

In 2018, the GCDC donated $250,000 to county government and paid for the construction of a new coroner’s office on jail property.

The GCDC doesn’t hesitate to provide inmate labor to assist any number of local entities, including saving construction costs on the new bathrooms and concession stand at the softball fields at Beville Park, and assisting with expenses related to the E911 Call Center.

The GCDC has also donated vehicles to the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, county Road Department and county fire departments, among many other generous offerings to the community.
