A fire has severely damaged a Leitchfield residence.
Monday night at approximately 10:55, the Leitchfield Fire Department and EMS responded to Britt Street, a dead-end road off the 500 block of Sunbeam Road, on the report of smoke pouring from a home.
Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the two-story structure. It was quickly determined the fire was coming from the basement and spreading to the upper floor of the home.
The fire was so hot that, even though it was contained to inside the residence, the siding on the front of the residence melted.
Leitchfield fire personnel attacked the blaze inside the home and within approximately 20 minutes the heavy smoke had abated. Firefighters, though, continued to work the basement and other areas of the residence to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.
The fire began in a basement utility room containing a washer and dryer, according to Assistant Fire Chief Roy Hack. It’s likely the residence was a total loss.
No one was home when the fire began.
There were no injuries reported.
This marks the second major fire in Grayson County since Thursday when 64-year-old Robert L. Crain perished in a blaze at a home on Old Leitchfield Road in Clarkson. The cause of that fire has yet to be determined.
