Two police officers in Bowling Green were shot and a suspect killed after a man “experiencing a health crisis” took control of an officer’s firearm, according to Kentucky State Police.

The shooting took place sometime before 4:30 Wednesday morning at LifeSkills at 822 Woodway Street in west Bowling Green.

The state police investigation showed that two Bowling Green officers responded to a call for service involving an individual experiencing a mental health crisis at LifeSkills.

“During the encounter, the individual became combative, attempted to disarm one of the officers and was able to gain control of a weapon, firing it in the direction of the two officers,” KSP said in a press release.

One of the officers returned fire, striking and killing the man.

Both officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries from gunshot wounds and were transported to a local hospital where they were treated and released.

LifeSkills offers mental health, addiction and crisis services as well as support and services “to assist people with intellectual and developmental disabilities …,” according to the agency’s website.

LifeSkills released the following statement on Wednesday morning to WNKY.com:

“Earlier this morning there was an incident at the Adult Crisis Stabilization Unit (ACSU) involving the Bowling Green Police Department. ACSU building will not be available for services for the remainder of the day. All other LifeSkills services and supports will be available. The Kentucky State Police are handling the investigation. We are fully cooperating with that investigation and accordingly, can have no additional comment at this time.”

The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation.
