The Grayson County High School Football Alumni Association (GCHSFAA) hosted its 6th annual “Help the Cougars Tackle Hunger Food Drive” in support of the Grayson County Alliance Food Pantry.
As in previous years, the food drive coincided with the Cougars’ Spirit Week and Homecoming game.
A combined effort from the Homecoming tailgate party and game, local businesses, churches, and Grayson County Schools produced outstanding results, as this year’s drive collected 2,434 pounds of food and $2,650 in direct monetary donations.
Those donations will provide 23,264 meals for Grayson County families struggling with food insecurity.
“The 2024 Tackle Hunger campaign will make a significant impact in the fight for the one in seven adults and one in four children hungry in Grayson County,” the GCHSFAA said.
In addition to Grayson County Schools, participating in the food drive were Tri-Parish Catholic Churches of Grayson County, Farmer’s Feed Mill Restaurant and Hometown Hangout.
Lawler Elementary School was the top producer in the food drive, as students and staff collected 952 pounds of food resulting in 846 meals.
The “Help the Cougars Tackle Hunger Food Drive” has flourished since the first year of the program (2019) when 373 pounds of food was collected, providing 331 meals. Since that time, the “Tackle Hunger Food Drives” have collected 14,958 pounds of food and raised $15,289 in monetary donations for GCA, while producing 135,613 meals.
