A firefighter has been seriously injured after crashing while enroute to a fire.

The accident happened Thursday morning at approximately 7:30 when a 29-year-old firefighter with the Northern Pendleton Fire District was responding in a tanker truck to a report of a fire. While traveling in the 800 block of Hwy 177, about 10 miles south of Alexandria, the tanker truck’s brakes apparently malfunctioned, as the firefighter was traveling down a hill and into a left turn, Fox19.com reports.

The tanker truck rolled over at least once before coming to rest in a creek bed.

The firefighter notified dispatch that he had crashed, saying he was “hurt bad,” according to Fox19.com. He was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to University of Cincinnati Hospital.

His current condition is not known.

The tanker truck the firefighter was driving contained up to 5,000 gallons of water.
