The Kentucky state senator injured in a lawn mower accident last month has died.

State Sen. Johnnie L. Turner, 76, of Harlan, succumbed to injuries he incurred in the September 16 accident when he drove a lawn mower into the deep end of an empty swimming pool at his residence.

Turner, an attorney and Republican, represented Senate District 29, which includes Bell, Floyd, Harlan, Knott, and Letcher counties.

He was first elected to the Kentucky Senate in 2020. He served in the Kentucky House from 1999 to 2002.

Turner served in the U.S. Army at the Panama Canal Zone from 1967 until 1969, according to a social media post by state Sen. Phillip Wheeler, R-Pikeville.

Turner graduated from the University of Kentucky School of Law in 1978. He received his undergraduate degree from Union College in Barbourville.

Turner, following the accident, was initially transported to a local hospital before being transferred to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
