A Kentucky State Police trooper has shot and killed a man who shot at police after apparently shooting and killing his own wife.

The shootings occurred Friday evening at approximately 6:20 at a residence on Hwy 1591 near Bardwell in Caldwell County.

The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team said its preliminary investigation revealed that troopers were notified of a male suspect saying he had shot his wife. Upon troopers and the Carlisle County Sheriff’s Office arriving at the home, police observed a male individual at the residence.

During an interaction, shots were fired by the individual, police said, as a trooper returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

After the shooting, police located a deceased female inside the residence.

The investigation is ongoing and being led by Kentucky State Police.
