Grayson County Fiscal Court received an update on the progress of the Twin Lakes Skatepark Project.

Casey Keown, a Kentucky State Police Post 4 detective who is spearheading the project, told magistrates that the “Rock the Park” event held over the weekend, featuring Caneyville native and country music recording artist Elvie Shane, raised about $14,000 for the venture.

Keown stated that the project still needs to secure a location for the skatepark, with a possibility being the land between the Grayson County Public Library and Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center. But, Keown noted, “nothing is set in stone.”

The project has received multiple “qualification packages” from reputable skatepark designers and construction companies, according to Keown, who presented the packages to magistrates.

Since March of this year, Keown said the project has raised about $20,000.

The proposed 11,000-square-foot park would cost between $650,000 and $935,000, based on Keown’s previous presentation to the Leitchfield City Council in support of a new skatepark in March 2023, where he estimated the concrete park would cost between $60 and $85 per finished-square-foot.

One source of funding could be the Tony Hawk Foundation – Hawk is widely considered the greatest skateboarder of all time, as well as an entrepreneur. The organization provides grant money to cities building skateparks, but Keown previously said he believes local government[s] must provide 30 percent of the cost of the project before Hawk’s foundation would consider issuing a grant.
