A scammer has attempted to con Grayson Co. Sheriff Norman Chaffins over the phone, telling the sheriff he was going to “scam thousands of people in Grayson County and there’s nothing (he) could do about it.”

“I just had an interesting conversation with this idiot trying to scam people,” Chaffins said in a social media post.

Chaffins noted that the scam, where the con man claims to be with a law enforcement agency and demands payment of a fine, is “one of the most common scams …”

“The scammer even admitted to me that he was going to scam thousands of people in Grayson County and there’s nothing I could do about it,” Chaffins said. “Unfortunately, until we have the counter technology to combat those people, he is right.”

The sheriff said the best defense against scammers is to “just hang up the phone,” as police agencies “will never threaten you with arrest if you don’t pay a fine over the phone.”

Chaffins added that if anyone receives such a call to contact the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office at 270-259-3024 or your local law enforcement agency.

“Maybe we can flood him with a bunch of phone calls so he will move on to someone else and some other county,” Chaffins added.
