The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office sent deputies to cover shifts in Russell County following the shooting death of Deputy Josh Phipps.

“This past week, the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office had the honor and privilege to cover shifts for the Russell County Sheriff’s Office while their deputies had time to mourn the passing of one of their own, Deputy Josh Phipps, a true hero,” Sheriff Adam Wright said in a social media post.

Phipps, 38, was shot and killed in Russell Springs on Monday, September 16 while exchanging gunfire with 41-year-old Joshua Arnold. Arnold also suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

Phipps and other Russell County deputies were assisting Kentucky State Police locate Arnold after he fled troopers on foot.

“The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office sent 6 deputies to cover 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts over the course of several days, and to answer calls for service for the Russell County Sheriff’s Office,” Wright said. “These deputies went above and beyond and exemplified selfless service, while extending a helping hand to fellow Kentuckians in a time of need that is consistent with the values displayed daily by the citizens of Ohio County and the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office. We are proud to have these deputies serve our community.”
