A motorist allegedly under the influence has been arrested after driving down an embankment from Valero’s parking lot and through a fence before hitting a large highway sign on South Main Street in Leitchfield.

Leitchfield Police Officers Wally Ritter and Tamara Jupin, Grayson County Deputies Caleb Owens and Hunter Miller, the Leitchfield Fire Department, Leitchfield Public Works Director Wesley Shull, and EMS responded to the crash in the 700 block of South Main Street Friday night at approximately 11:10.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found that a Nissan Armada had traveled south down an embankment from Valero’s parking lot and across White Street, through a fence at the park-and-ride – while narrowly missing a large tree and electrical box – before striking a highway sign.

Ritter, upon making contact with the vehicle, had to bust out the driver’s side window to retrieve the driver, 32-year-old Ian Hinson, who was, according to police, showing multiple signs of being under the influence of a substance.

During a search of the vehicle, Ritter located multiple “cut straws.”

Hinson was transported by EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center for medical clearance before being lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center. He was charged with DUI, first-degree criminal mischief and possession of drug paraphernalia.

(*Editor’s Note: The story has been amended to report that during a search of the vehicle, Ritter located multiple “cut straws,” and not syringes. “I know they looked like syringes, but they were cut straws,” Ritter told K105.)
