A child has been fatally struck by a vehicle in western Kentucky.

Union County Sheriff Jason Thomas said the fatal accident occurred Sunday at approximately 5:45 p.m. when a nine-year-old boy, identified as Bentlee Cook by WFIE.com, was struck in the small town of Waverly while riding his bicycle.

Thomas said Bentlee was hit by a pickup truck, being driven by 86-year-old Samual Willett, of Morganfield. The boy died at a local hospital “a short time after his arrival …,” the sheriff said.

“The initial investigation shows alcohol was not a factor. It appears the boy accidentally rode his bicycle into an intersection and into the path of the oncoming truck giving little reaction time for the driver to avoid striking the child,” Thomas said in a social media post.

The sheriff continued, saying that security footage from a nearby home recorded the entire incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
