A Falls of Rough man who broke into the Leitchfield Animal Shelter and let over a dozen dogs loose, resulting in one dog’s death, has been indicted.
Michael Baker, 43, was indicted by a Grayson County Grand Jury on third-degree burglary, second-degree cruelty to animals, acquiring control over an animal, acquiring control over an animal facility, damage to an animal facility, and theft by unlawful taking.
On Tuesday morning, February 27, the Leitchfield Police Department responded to the break-in at approximately 7:30 and discovered that 16 dogs had been released from their kennels. One dog was found deceased, while three dogs suffered superficial injuries and were treated at the animal shelter. One seriously injured dog was treated by “veterinary services,” LPD Det. Sgt. Ian Renfrow said.
Surveillance video shows several dogs fighting which, police said, may have led to the dog’s death.
All the dogs let loose were recovered.
Police, while reviewing surveillance footage, “found that a male subject entered the facility past a locked gate,” Renfrow stated.
Baker, police said, “entered an area of dog kennels and multiple dogs are seen running out of the kennel area. Baker is then seen exiting the kennel area and walking around the parking lot trying to catch a particular white dog, which he catches and leaves the property with … Baker is also seen moving items around on the property.”
LPD obtained a warrant for Baker, who was arrested by officers and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office at his residence.
