The Caneyville and Leitchfield Fire Departments battled a fire in a 500-foot-long chicken house.

The fire departments were dispatched to the fire at 633 Brooks Road, about two miles east of Caneyville off Beaver Dam Road, at approximately 9:45 Thursday night. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from one end of the metal-frame chicken housing facility.

Firefighters concentrated their efforts on the back half of the building, as the fire began spreading the length of the facility after starting when, Caneyville Fire Chief Brian Pharris said, an industrial fan motor on one end of the building caught fire.

It took firefighters between 30 and 40 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

The fire heavily damaged multiple components in the ceiling, including a feeding system, which dropped to the floor of the building. Insulation in the affected area either burned up or was displaced.

No chickens were in the building.

One of the property’s residents told K105 that the building was full of chickens only two weeks ago, and that they would be receiving a new shipment in a couple of weeks.

No injuries were reported and firefighters cleared the scene at approximately 11:00 p.m.

Grayson Co. Emergency Management Director Carey Sims assisted at the scene.
