An eastern Kentucky deputy has been shot while serving papers following a domestic dispute.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon at approximately 3:30 when Wayne County Deputy Cody Neal was serving papers at a residence on Carter Dock Road, near the Clinton County line, according to Wayne County Emergency Management.

Neal, who was shot in the chest but was wearing a vest, was airlifted to University of Tennessee Medical Center but has since been released.

Following the shooting, a standoff ensued that lasted several hours and resulted in the death of a 38-year-old man. The man was pronounced deceased at about 11:45 Monday night.

The Wayne County Coroner’s Office told news outlets that Neal was serving papers at the residence following an earlier domestic incident between the deceased male and his wife.

The deceased man’s wife was not at the residence during the shooting and standoff.

The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation.

Neal has been employed by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office since January 2011, according to the sheriff’s office. He completed his Department of Criminal Justice training in July 2011.
