A Leitchfield man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly causing a four-vehicle accident that seriously injured a Caneyville teenager.
Tuesday evening at approximately 7:20, the Leitchfield Police and Fire Departments, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and EMS responded to the crash on the William Thomason Byway near the intersection of Zoe Lane.
Upon arriving at the scene, police “were alerted to the fact that one of the drivers,” 32-year-old Michael Bounds, “had walked away from the scene,” according to the Leitchfield Police Department.
Bounds was quickly captured by Grayson County Deputy Hunter Miller and Sgt. Jordan Jones in the parking lot of a nearby business. Police then located “multiple open alcoholic beverage containers” inside Bounds’ Chevrolet truck, according to the arrest citation (written by LPD Officer Wally Ritter).
While police spoke with Bounds, “he obviously smelled of alcoholic beverages,” the citation states. Additionally, the suspect, who was unsteady on his feet, displayed bloodshot and glossy eyes, slurred speech and his “mood was roller coaster-like,” according to the citation.
The suspect was arrested and a search warrant obtained for a blood draw at Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center. He was then lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center where he was charged with second-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, his second DUI, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle, and leaving the scene of an injury accident (failure to render aid with death or serious physical injury).
The preliminary accident investigation showed that Bounds, traveling south on the bypass, crossed the center line and struck a northbound Ford F-150, according to Leitchfield police. Bounds then hit a Honda passenger car along with another vehicle.
A passenger in the Honda, a 19-year-old Caneyville woman, was extricated from the vehicle by Leitchfield fire personnel, who removed the passenger side door, Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall said.
The teen suffered serious injuries, including a “traumatic” head injury, the citation states, when she struck the windshield upon impact. She was, though, wearing a seat belt, Duvall stated.
She was transported to University of Louisville Hospital.
No other injuries were reported.
