A former middle school teacher in eastern Kentucky has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a young girl and possessing sexually explicit images of the victim.

The Whitesburg Police Department arrested 55-year-old Brian W. Bailey, of Benham (Harlan Co.), after he was indicted by a Letcher County Grand Jury for third-degree rape (victim under 16), three counts of possession of child abuse material (sexually explicit images of the victim) and tampering with physical evidence.

Police told news outlets that the charges are related to Bailey’s “inappropriate contact and communication with a juvenile female dating back to November 2023, when the investigation began.”

The tampering with physical evidence charge comes after Bailey allegedly attempted to destroy explicit images of the victim, according to The Mountain Eagle.

Bailey was a teacher at Whitesburg Middle School.

He was lodged in the Letcher County Jail.

Denise Yonts, Superintendent of Letcher County Schools, said Bailey has been terminated from his position with the school district.

Kentucky State Police is leading the ongoing investigation.
