Someone, or possibly several suspects, stole Abraham Lincoln’s top hat from a bronze sculptor in Louisville’s Waterfront Park.
The statute of Lincoln resting on a rock with his top hat and bible next to him premiered at the park in 2009.
The sculpturer, Ed Hamilton, told the Courier Journal that the top hat “was anchored down into that monolith rock. I don’t know what they could have used, maybe some more manpower or some crowbars. I guess they kept (trying) until they got it up.”
Photos of the missing top hat began appearing on social media on Saturday.
The Louisville Metro Police Department has opened an investigation.
The park has multiple security cameras, but none were directed at the Lincoln sculptor when the hat was removed. Officials are reviewing surveillance cameras from the area.
Anyone with information regarding this theft is asked to contact Louisville police at 502-574-LMPD (5673).
