An Ohio County man brandishing a gun and knife has been arrested after intentionally crashing into a tree during a police pursuit.
Ohio County Sheriff Adam Wright said 66-year-old Davis Coots, of Cromwell, was spotted “walking around the Walmart area (1700 block of North Main St.) with a gun and knife …” The Beaver Dam Police Department arrived on scene and learned Coots had fled, but not before striking a vehicle as he left the area.
Police issued a BOLO for Coots, with an Ohio County deputy making contact with Coots’ vehicle on Hwy 62 east. The deputy attempted to stop Coots, but the suspect fled, Wright said.
The pursuit entered Rob Roy Road where Coots is accused of intentionally driving on the opposite lane of travel. The pursuit turned onto Flint Springs Road where, according to Wright, Coots “intentionally drove head-on into a tree.”
Coots was taken into custody and transported to Ohio County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. After receiving treatment, he will be lodged in the Ohio County Detention Center.
He was charged by the sheriff’s office with multiple counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle), possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, reckless driving, and speeding.
The Beaver Dam Police Department “will also have charges as a result of the initial call,” Wright said.
