One day short of the two-year anniversary of devasting tornadoes touching down in western Kentucky, two tornadoes tore through Warren, Todd and Logan counties.

On Saturday afternoon, the tornado, which originated in Tennessee, struck Logan and Todd counties as an EF-2 twister, with winds up to 115 miles per hour. While in Tennessee, the tornado caused “EF-3 damage,” according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Another tornado developed and touched down in the Smallhouse Road area of Bowling Green as an EF-1 tornado with maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour, the NWS said.

The extensive damage in southern Kentucky included roofs blown off homes, uprooted trees and utility poles and barns destroyed. No injuries or deaths have been reported in Kentucky.

The NWS said damage surveyors in Kentucky continue to evaluate the path and destruction of the tornadoes.

In Tennessee, twisters killed six people on Saturday and sent about two dozen people to the hospital, according to the Associated Press. Three people, including a two-year-old child, were killed in Montgomery County, Tennessee, just north of Nashville near the Kentucky state line.

December 2021 tornado outbreak

The tornado outbreak on Saturday came two years after seven twisters caused varying amounts of damage in Kentucky on December 10, 2021. One twister traveled approximately 130 miles on the ground as it leveled the city of Mayfield and did catastrophic damage in Dawson Springs and Bremen.

The twister, which alternated between an EF-3 (winds up to 165 mph) and EF-5 (winds 200-plus mph) as it traveled though the commonwealth in a northeasterly direction, ended in Falls of Rough.

A separate tornado ago ripped through Bowling Green, killing a dozen people.

In total, 74 people perished in the December 2021 tornado outbreak in Kentucky, which did $3.9 billion in damage. Nearly 700 people were injured.
