A Leitchfield man recently convicted of drug and theft charges has been nabbed at the Grayson County Detention Center with over 20 grams of methamphetamine.
On Tuesday night at approximately 11:15, Grayson County Deputy Thomas Lane executed a traffic stop on a Ford Ranger driving in reverse and in the wrong direction near the 600 block of Shrewsbury Road, Sheriff Norman Chaffins said.
Lane made contact with the driver, 47-year-old Michael S. Payton, and discovered he was driving on a DUI suspended license. Additionally, the vehicle’s registration had been cancelled.
Payton was arrested and charged with driving on a DUI suspended license, no registration, no insurance, and obscuring the identity of a machine.
He was transported to the Grayson County Detention Center. While being processed into the detention center, Payton was found to have over 20 grams of methamphetamine “concealed in a jacket pocket,” Chaffins said.
Payton was then charged with trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine), first-degree promoting contraband and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Payton was convicted in May 2023 in Grayson County for theft by unlawful taking (automobile) and in Breckinridge County for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), according to the Kentucky Department of Corrections.
In January 2022, Payton was convicted in Grayson County for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine). He was additionally convicted in February 2019 for possession of methamphetamine, also in Grayson County.
He is on probation until July 2028.
