A Leitchfield man has been arrested after taking out a utility pole in a DUI crash and fleeing the scene.
Tuesday night at approximately 7:55, the Leitchfield Police and Fire Department and Grayson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of Beaver Dam Road (Hwy 62) and Shrewsbury Road (Hwy 187) after a Lexus SUV struck a utility pole, snapping it in half. The vehicle also damaged two light poles on private property.
The driver of the SUV, Thomas White, 55, of Leitchfield, left the scene and walked to his residence on nearby Realand Way, witnesses told police.
Officers arrived at White’s residence and made contact with the suspect and “noted a strong smell of alcoholic beverage and multiple signs of impairment,” LPD Det. Sgt. Ian Renfrow said. As officers escorted White to a patrol car, he nearly fell to the ground multiple times.
The suspect was transported to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center where he refused a blood draw. Police then obtained a search warrant for White’s blood as “he became continuously irate and refused to allow his blood to be drawn for testing.”
White was then transported to the Grayson County Detention Center where he was charged with DUI, first-degree criminal mischief, leaving the scene of an accident, and obstruction of governmental operations.
