Parents of a three-year-old boy overdosed on heroin with their son in the vehicle in a Berea business parking lot.

The Berea Police Department responded Friday afternoon to Walmart after 32-year-old William D. Gross, of Stanford, and 27-year-old Megan A. Sanders, of Richmond, were found unresponsive in their vehicle with their child in the backseat.

Police were dispatched to the scene after the vehicle, being driven by Sanders, struck a utility pole. Sanders then placed the car in reverse and passed out. When police made contact the car was still in reverse but wasn’t moving.

The toddler’s face, according to a report by WKYT.com, was “blood red,” as the temperature at the time was 81 degrees.

Police took control of the toddler and placed him in an air conditioned vehicle.

Gross and Sanders were administered Narcan, which revived both suspects, who admitted to police that they had just taken heroin.

The couple was charged with first-degree criminal abuse (victim under the age of 12), first-degree wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor. Sanders was additionally charged with DUI (non-alcohol) and driving on a DUI suspended license. She was also served with an arrest warrant for failure to appear.

Both were lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.
