Two Ohio County inmates are facing additional charges after being caught conspiring to bring drugs into the detention facility.
Ohio County Sheriff Adam Wrights said detectives from his office and the Pennyrile Narcotics Task Force “acted on information that was received after intercepting several jail phone calls from an inmate at the Ohio County Detention Center.”
Police heard, via a jail telephone conversation, inmate Daniel P. Carter, 43, of Centertown, ask for methamphetamine to be brought to the jail, according to Wright.
Police located the drugs after it was dropped off at the jail and conducted surveillance in the area where the drugs were placed. Authorities then observed inmate Jonathan P. Shultz, 21, of Centertown, retrieve the drugs during recreation time and conceal it on his person.
Shultz was searched and was found to be in possession of about two grams of methamphetamine, according to Wright.
The sheriff said the investigation findings will be presented to an Ohio County Grand Jury for possible indictment of Carter and Shultz for promoting contraband and trafficking in and possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).
Police did not release information regarding the person who allegedly placed the drugs at the jail.
Carter has been in jail since August 1, 2023, on multiple failure to appear warrants and first-degree bail jumping. He’s being held on three bonds totaling $23,500.
Shultz has been lodged in the jail since April 22, 2023, for second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor, trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine), trafficking in marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He’s being held on a $25,000 10 percent cash/surety bond.
