A woman has been charged with multiple counts of cruelty to animals after she attempted to drown kittens in a bathtub.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office responded Thursday night just before midnight to Chapel Road, about five miles north of London, on the report of a domestic disturbance. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies made contact with a male outside and learned that a female involved in the complaint was inside the residence and “reportedly extremely intoxicated,” according to Sheriff John Root.

Deputies entered the home and could hear “muffled crying sounds of kittens near the couch area.” When police “checked a trashcan near there, they observed a plastic bag tied up and located kittens, soaking wet, inside the tied bag,” Root said.

Further investigation showed the female, 45-year-old Rachel D. Joseph, of East Bernstadt, tried to drown the kittens in a bathtub.

She was arrested and charged with second-degree cruelty to animals and resisting arrest and lodged in Laurel County Correctional Center.

Laurel County animal control personnel took possession of the kittens.
