A former Somerset Police Department captain is facing over 20 charges after being accused of destroying or removing evidence and stealing drugs from the department’s evidence room.
Michael I. Correll, 44, of Somerset, was indicted by a Pulaski County Grand Jury on Wednesday for first-degree burglary, 10 counts of third-degree burglary, four counts of tampering with physical evidence, trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine), two counts of theft by unlawful taking (more than $1,000, less than $10,000), receiving stolen property (firearm), first-degree official misconduct, abuse of public trust, and first-degree unlawful access to a computer.
Correll retired as a captain on November 1, 2022, according to Kentucky State Police, but kept his keys and keycards, using them to illegally enter the police department on several occasions and steal evidence.
The initial investigation into Correll began on January 8, 2023, when state police was contacted by Somerset Police Chief William Hunt after Hunt “became aware of suspicious activity involving” Correll.
Correll was a law enforcement officer for about 20 years. In addition to working for the Somerset PD, he also served with the Stanford PD.
The investigation continues.
