For the first time in Kentucky, a baby has been left in a fire department’s Baby Box.
A healthy newborn baby was placed in the Baby Box at the Bowling Green Fire Department on Lovers Lane, officials announced on Thursday.
The Baby Box worked just as designed, as a silent alarm alerted firefighters to the baby, which was recovered by fire officials within two minutes of being placed in the climate-controlled box, according to WAVE3.com.
This marked the 24th time since November 2017 that a baby has been surrendered to a fire department via a Baby Box in the U.S., the Louisville television station reports.
“This baby is healthy,” Safe Haven Baby Box co-founder and CEO Monica Kelsey said at a press conference on Friday. “This baby is beautiful. This baby is perfect and the Department of Child Services is now looking for a forever home for this baby.”
The Bowling Fire Department installed the Baby Box in December 2022. There are 16 Baby Boxes in Kentucky.
