A former deputy sheriff in Letcher County has been indicted on multiple sex abuse charges.

Ben Fields, 36, of Whitesburg, was indicted by a Letcher County Grand Jury on two counts of third-degree rape, two counts of third-degree sodomy, three counts of tampering with a prison monitoring device, and perjury.

The indictment states, according to prosecutors, that from July 2021 through January 2022, Fields, while serving as a deputy sheriff and/or an employee of a company under contract with the Letcher County Jail, tampered with a prisoner’s home monitoring device and raped an individual he knew was in custody and/or under house arrest.

The indictment also notes that Fields committed perjury by giving a false statement in a criminal complaint.

Fields was fired in February 2022.
