A Daviess County deputy has shot a man who assaulted a woman and juvenile with a hammer.

Kentucky State Police said deputies responded Friday morning at approximately 11:00 to the 9000 block of Hwy 60 in Owensboro “regarding a man with a hammer breaking into homes.”

Deputy Alex Cooms arrived in the area and observed a “frantic woman and a juvenile running from a house,” police said. The woman told Cooms she and the juvenile escaped the residence after being assaulted by a man with a hammer.

Cooms then entered the home and confronted the suspect, 39-year-old Gregory A. Embry, of Owensboro, who police said was armed with a hammer.

Embry attempted to attack Cooms with the hammer, police said, but the deputy shot Embry. He was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Cooms was not injured.

Criminal charges are pending. The investigation is ongoing and being led by Kentucky State Police.

Embry, according to online records, has been arrested numerous times in the last nine years for charges including, burglary, terroristic threatening, public intoxication, DUI, menacing, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and menacing.
