A Garrard County High School teacher has been arrested after being accused of driving to school drunk, and having a wreck in the process.
The Garrard County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35-year-old Chelsea Denny, of Lancaster, for DUI (aggravating circumstances) on Tuesday morning.
Deputies responded to the school after receiving a report of a teacher being involved in a wreck. When deputies arrived at the high school, they observed Denny drive into the parking lot in a vehicle that had sustained damage, according to multiple media outlets. Denny told police she crashed her car when she swerved to avoid hitting a cat.
As Denny spoke with police, the deputies detected an odor of alcohol as the suspect also had slurred speech. She was given a field sobriety test, which she failed.
WKYT.com reports that Denny’s blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit to drive.
She was lodged in the Jessamine County Detention Center but has since been released on bond.
The Garrard County High School website lists Denny as a “classroom instructor.” According to her LinkedIn profile she teaches English.
