Leitchfield police have arrested a man for his fourth DUI since December 2018.

Monday night at approximately 11:50, the Leitchfield Police Department was informed by Central Dispatch of a reckless driver approaching Leitchfield on the eastbound Western Kentucky Parkway.

LPD Sgt. Keith Harrell responded and made contact with a Toyota truck near the 111-mile marker, as the vehicle traveled at approximately 35 miles per hour and was swerving in the roadway, police said.

The vehicle, being driven by 28-year-old Adam Whitman, of Lebanon, failed to stop when Harrell activated his blue lights, as the suspect continued to swerve and travel under 40 miles per hour.

Whitman then took the Clarkson exit and turned east onto Millerstown Road. Harrell activated his siren, with Whitman turning into the parking lot at Barrett’s Marathon at 918 Millerstown Road.

Upon making contact with Whitman, Harrell detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from inside the truck and from the suspect. The sergeant also saw several empty liquor containers in the cab of the truck.

Whitman, police said, was so intoxicated that he could not complete a field sobriety test, as Harrell thought the suspect might injure himself. It was later determined that Whitman had a blood alcohol level 3.5 times the legal limit to drive, according to police.

Whitman was arrested and initially taken to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center for medical clearance and a blood draw.

He was charged with his fourth DUI (aggravating circumstances) and lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

LPD Officer Tamara Jupin and Grayson County Deputy Caleb Owens assisted at the scene.

According to online records, Whitman was first arrested for DUI by Kentucky State Police in Hopkins County on December 6, 2018. He was arrested by Madisonville police for DUI on July 2, 2020.

He was next arrested in Hart County and charged with DUI on September 7, 2021.
