The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office has had $25,000 stolen from its evidence room.
Kentucky State Police is investigating the theft.
Four people had access to the room, secured by a numerical punch lock and special key card, during a transition of evidence officers, media outlets report. There are also surveillance cameras inside and outside the room. New security measures have been implemented since the discovery of the theft.
The theft was originally discovered during an audit months ago, but is just becoming public.
“Theft unfortunately can happen anywhere, businesses, banks, churches, charity organizations, schools, doctor’s offices and police and governmental agencies,” Sheriff Greg Speck said in a news release. “I’ve seen all of these over my career. It is extremely disappointing it happened here.”
Speck did not have access to the room, police said.
The stolen cash was seized during a drug investigation.
