Kentucky State Police is investigating after a child was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Muhlenberg County.

State police said troopers responded to the crash on Hwy 181 south Tuesday night at approximately 6:50.

The preliminary investigation, according to police, showed that a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling south on Hwy 181 when for unknown reasons it exited the right shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle struck an earthen embankment and began to overturn.

A passenger, 11-year-old Zachary Kangis, of Central City, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Muhlenberg County Coroner’s Office. Police said the boy was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver, 56-year-old Rebecca Evans, of Greenville, was transported to Muhlenberg Community Hospital. Police did not release how badly Evans was injured in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by Trooper Brett Martin.
