On this date in 2000, the city of Leitchfield was struck by a tornado that resulted in “F3” damage.
“One supercell (strong type of thunderstorm) in particular moved across Breckinridge and Grayson counties in north-central Kentucky during the afternoon hours (of May 23, 2000),” the National Weather Service in Louisville wrote in a blog post on Monday.
“This storm produced golf ball to baseball size hail in Breckinridge County. It then generated a tornado over Grayson County which struck the Leitchfield area around 200 pm CDT producing substantial damage to numerous structures and homes in the region.”
The storm left the area with roughly $28 million in damages which equals over $47 million in 2022.
