A Wayne County man has been jailed after shooting his mother on Mother’s Day during a fight over an Xbox.
Wayne County Sheriff Tim Catron said that Sunday morning at approximately 8:30, deputies received information about “a person with a gunshot wound … on the way to Wayne County Hospital.”
At approximately the same time, Catron received a call that the suspect was at a neighbor’s residence waiting for law enforcement.
Upon police making contact with the suspect, 22-year-old Jacob R. Small, of Monticello, deputies learned the shooting occurred on Grayer Ridge Road after Small “had gotten into a verbal dispute with his mother over an Xbox controller that he had given to her as a Mother’s Day gift,” police said.
As Small’s mother and a female were leaving the residence, Small fired into the vehicle with a 22-caliber rifle, striking his mother.
Small’s mother was treated at Wayne County Hospital before being transferred to University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center. Her condition is unknown at this time, police said.
Small was arrested and charged with attempted murder (domestic violence), first-degree assault and second-degree criminal mischief. He was lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center.
