An Elizabethtown police officer shot and killed a man after he took control of the officer’s taser during an altercation, according to a Kentucky State Police investigation.
The Kentucky State Police Critical Response Team said its preliminary investigation showed that on the evening of December 7, Elizabethtown Police Department Sgt. Chris Lewis, a nine-year-veteran of the department, was assisting with a domestic violence investigation. In that role, Lewis transported several juvenile witnesses, along with the victim, back to their residence on Pleasant View Drive.
Upon arriving at the home, Lewis discovered the suspect, 34-year-old Gary McCormick, of Elizabethtown. Shortly after Lewis exited his vehicle to speak with McCormick, an altercation ensued where Lewis deployed a taser; however, “McCormick disarmed Lewis of his taser and attempted to use it on the officer,” state police said.
Lewis then shot and killed McCormick. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hardin County Coroner’s Office.
Per procedure, Lewis was placed on administrative leave for two weeks.
