Kentucky State Police is looking for the Owsley County sheriff after he allegedly assaulted a girls basketball player during a Friday night melee.

Troopers are searching for first-term Owsley County Sheriff Brent Lynch after a fight broke out while the Owsley County High School girls basketball team was taking on Perry County Central in Hazard.

“During an altercation between players during the game, it is alleged Mr. Lynch, who is also part of the coaching staff for Owsley County High School, assaulted a juvenile female,” KSP said. Lynch is accused of running onto the playing floor and striking a Perry County Central player.

He is wanted for fourth-degree assault, a class A misdemeanor. An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday by Perry County District Court, police said.

“We’ve been unable to locate him so far, so troopers are still trying to get his whereabouts,” Trooper Matthew Gayheart said.

Owsley County Schools Superintendent Tim Bobrowski said Wednesday that Lynch has been suspended for one game.

“Per KHSAA’s recommendations, both teams have suspended four student athletes for two games,” Bobrowski added.

Lynch served for many years as a Kentucky State Trooper, Owsley County Judge-Executive Cale Turner told news outlets.
