A rare December tornado caused significant damage to a section of Scott County early Monday morning.

The National Weather Service in Louisville said its preliminary storm survey report indicates an EF-1 tornado packing winds up to 95 miles per hour struck Camping Ground at 4:22 Monday morning. According to the National Weather Service, the last twister to touch down Kentucky in December occurred on December 31, 2013, in Bourbon County.

The tornado did substantial damage to Parker’s Mobile Home Park in Stamping Ground, as 19 of the 24 homes suffered damage, with five of the trailers enduring extensive damage, city officials said. Two of the mobile homes were pulled off their foundations. One of the uprooted mobile homes partially landed on another trailer.

Outbuildings, trees and utility poles were also damaged. Several people received minor injuries and many residents have been without power since the tornado struck.

The tornado was on the ground for about a quarter-mile, officials said, with a maximum width of 60 yards.

The tornado also caused the cancellation of school in Scott County.
