The advancements in forensic medicine and DNA testing have allowed the remains of World War II soldier from Kentucky to be identified.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency has identified the remains of U.S. Navy Fireman Second Class, 21-year-old Hal Jake Allison, of Paducah. Allison was killed in the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor.

Allison was assigned to the USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor. The battleship was struck by multiple torpedoes causing it to quickly capsize, killing all 429 sailors on board.

“These identifications are always heartbreaking for the families and for all Kentuckians who honor their service and sacrifice,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “But we are grateful for the scientific advances and professional determination that makes it possible finally to bring our heroes home.”

Funeral services for Allison have not yet finalized.
