An eastern Kentucky deputy sheriff and suspect both suffered gunshot wounds Tuesday night about 9:15.

Johnson County Deputy Dennis Hutchinson, a retired state trooper who recently transferred to the sheriff’s office from the Paintsville Police Department, was shot during a shootout with a suspect who fled police.

Authorities said the incident started when Paintsville police attempted a traffic stop on Hwy 23 on Paul Tipton, who refused to stop. The pursuit continued with Hutchinson and troopers joining the chase.

Tipton stopped just inside Lawrence County and exchanged gunfire with police.

Hutchinson was shot just above his right eye. He was transported to Pikeville Medical Center where he was treated and released.

Tipton was shot multiple times and transported to Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa before being transferred to Pikeville Medical Center. He was listed in stable condition.

Johnson County Sheriff Doug Saylor told news outlets police were looking for Tipton at the time of the attempted traffic stop “because he was of interest.”
